In order to discover this amazing natural beauty, you’ll need to visit one of the many Texas state parks in Hill Country. There are 18 to choose from so you’re spoiled for choice and in this guide, I’ll introduce you to some of my favorites.

The great thing about state parks in Hill Country is that there is such a high level of diversity. Whether you’re looking for breathtaking hiking trails, a glimpse of the local wildlife, or activities on the river, you’ll find something that steals your heart.

Top State Parks In Hill Country, Texas

Hill Country is filled with stunning natural locations that just have to be seen to be believed. State parks are dotted all over the landscape so here are some of the most unique and exciting.

Guadalupe River State Park

Located in Spring Branch, around 30 miles from San Antonio, you’ll find the Guadalupe River State Park. Appealing to families, this beautiful area is well known for its water-based activities and swimming but it has so much more to offer besides.

Hikers and cyclists will be thrilled with the 13 miles of trails and, if you fancy a multi-day hike or simply want to sleep under the stars, there are 85 campsites to choose from!

Guadalupe River State Park boasts more than 13 miles of river and is a hotspot for anglers as well as having plenty of opportunities for canoeing.

Wildlife lovers are in for a treat with plenty of critters to spot including the armadillo, bobcat, deer, coyote, and many more. Head to the visitor center where you can loan magnifying glasses and binoculars to help you spot all creatures great and small!

Lost Maples State Natural Area

If, like me, you’re someone that tears up at stunning scenery then the Lost Maples State Natural Area is going to blow your mind. This has to be one of the most visually appealing natural areas I’ve ever laid eyes on and is well known for the breathtaking colors of the trees in fall.

But no matter what time of year you visit, there’s always something to see and do at Lost Maples.

There are lots of fishing opportunities along the Sabinal River or, if hiking is your thing, then why not check out the 10 miles of trails where you’ll also be able to take part in geocaching.

Lost Maples is one of the smaller state parks in Hill Country, TX but it’s not lacking in natural beauty or things to do. In fact, you could happily wile away a couple of days here so the 30 campsites certainly come in handy.

Longhorn Cavern State Park

Located around an hour and a half drive from Austin and formed by an ancient river, Longhorn Cavern State Park is truly a geographical wonder.

While the park itself was created by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 30’s, the cavern has served as a shelter for natives for thousands of years. Today, its impressive chambers offer a natural experience that’s quite unlike anything else in the area.

Note that guided tours of the cavern should be booked in advance but you can enjoy the five surrounding hiking trails for free at any time you please. Along the way, you’ll see some interesting rock formations, an old watchtower, and the beautiful flora and fauna of the area.

When you’re done exploring this small but magnificent state park, you can check out the quaint gift shop and choose a memory to take home with you.

Devil’s Sinkhole Natural State Area

With a name like Devil’s Sinkhole, you may wonder whether you want to visit this mysterious-sounding location. But let me assure you that it’s a must see, especially for wildlife lovers.

Why? Well because this state park is famed for its bats. More than 3 million Mexican free-tailed bats call this place home and they can be seen swarming through the skies at dusk. There are even bat tours so you can learn more about these beautiful creatures of the night.

But even if wildlife isn’t your thing, you’re sure to find something to wow you at Devil’s Sinkhole. The sinkhole itself ( a 350 ft deep cavern) is certainly a sight to behold, although visitors can look but unfortunately cannot enter.

There are also guided nature walks but it is worth noting that free access to this park is not permitted. Anything you do here must be pre-booked and overseen by a guide.

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area

A hiker’s paradise is how I like to think of the Enchanted Rock State Natural Area. Here, you’re going to find more than 13 miles of hiking trails, one of which has gained notoriety among hikers, known as the Summit Trail.

The Summit Trail only runs for just over half a mile but it’s mostly uphill and is considered something of a challenge; ideal for leg day!

If that doesn’t take your fancy then don’t fret, there’s plenty more to see and do at this picturesque spot. Wildlife lovers will be delighted to spot creatures like white-tailed deer, armadillos, rabbits, foxes, and a whole host of bird species.
There’s also the opportunity to get involved in some rock climbing but keep in mind that rules apply and you must check in at the main office before heading off to explore.
